Dream

3.20.2010

Last night I had the strangest dream.

Usually, I don’t remember my dreams. But this was different. I must have fallen asleep around eleven thirty and I woke up two hours later, disoriented and very disconcerted.

I was sitting in what seemed like a New York subway car, across from Muddy Waters. There were a couple other blues players around us. No one else was on the car. Only, it wasn’t a subway. It was designed like a subway car, but it was an airplane. We were flying. I was playing my white Strat with Muddy*. He turned the singing over to me. Really?

That was when I woke up. I don’t know what song we were playing, but, man I was playing great. But it was unsettling. I knew a dream of playing the blues with dead people meant only one thing.

I went to the bathroom and came back to bed. I tried to will myself back on that subway car in the sky. It was funny, but the song to take me there was “Blues in the Bottle” by the Lovin’ Spoonful.

I don’t remember any more.

*I know. In the digital depiction of the dream, I'm holding my Eastman Airplane Tuxedo and not my Strat. Artistic license.

gonna ride underground
gonna play the blues
gonna fly away
gonna pay my dues today

gonna play with muddy
we are in the outer sphere
ain't that a man
at least that much is clear

ride on
ride on and on and on
ride on
let's ride on and on

who got the morning sun
who got the latest news
who got the poker money
who got the blues
i did

ride on
ride on and on and on
ride on
let's ride on and on

i like a thing or two
so much in the attitude
this is your captain speaking
gonna land in the blues
okay, drinks are on me

gonna ride underground
gonna play the blues
gonna fly away
gonna pay my dues today

gonna play with muddy
we are in the outer sphere
ain't that a man
at least that much is clear

ride on
ride on and on and on
ride on
let's ride on and on

I don't know how to sing this one, but maybe you can hum a bar or two. I'll plug in and play out.

Sung to the tune of "I'm a man"...I'm sure of it...and mjs, great lyrics....I think I'll rip you off.

Those Airplanes are a Bowie thing....Hey Barry, Muddy can never die....not to us.
